Serving up fun: Memorial Day pickleball party ideas

A woman dressed in red and white lunges for a pickleball shot while her partner watches.

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to summer, and what better way to celebrate than with a pickleball party?

Whether you're planning a backyard bash, a beachside rally, or a court-side cookout, pickleball is the perfect way to bring friends and family together. Here are some creative and easy-to-execute ideas to help you serve up fun all weekend long.

Set the scene with patriotic pickleball décor

Turn your local court or driveway into party central with red, white, and blue decorations. Think bunting along the net, star-spangled tablecloths on your snack table, and festive balloons marking court boundaries.

You can even swap out standard balls for red or blue pickleballs for an extra patriotic touch ... although serious players may not enjoy the switch.

Pro tip: On personal courts, you can use sidewalk chalk to draw fun court borders, on-court designs, or even a leaderboard bracket.

Plan a themed round robin or mini tournament

Keep things light and lively with a round robin format that mixes up teams every round. This keeps everyone engaged and allows players of all skill levels to participate.

Want to add a little competition? Create a mini tournament and offer a fun prize, like a barbecue spatula, a pickleball paddle keychain, or a custom T-shirt.

Format idea: Try “Dinks & Drinks,” where players rotate after each game and begin the next faceoff with a beer, mocktail, or sports drink.

Bring on the patriotic snacks and drinks

No holiday weekend is complete without tasty treats. Keep your players fueled with easy, patriotic-themed refreshing options like fruit kabobs (think strawberries, blueberries, and marshmallows), watermelon slices, pasta salad, and, obviously, pickle-themed snacks.

For drinks, stock up on electrolyte-rich beverages, flavored waters, and maybe a festive punch — just be sure to hydrate responsibly, particularly in warmer climates.

Create a chill zone for players and spectators

Set up lawn chairs, umbrellas, and a shaded rest area for those waiting their turn or cheering from the sidelines. Add a Bluetooth speaker for background music and consider a few lawn games like cornhole or giant Jenga to keep everyone entertained between matches.

Bonus: Provide sunscreen, bug spray, and extra sweat towels to show your guests you’re the host with the most.

Include fun extras for the full party experience

Want to take your pickleball party to the next level? Try one or two of these crowd-pleasers:

  • Best-dressed contest – Encourage guests to wear their best red, white, and blue pickleball outfits.

  • DIY paddle decorating station – Let guests customize paper or wooden paddle cutouts with stickers and paint. Or, create a sweet treat competition with pickleball-shaped cookies and sprinkles.

  • Photo booth corner – Set up a backdrop with fun props for players to snap and share their best pickleball poses.
