Project Boomstik FAQ: Answers to the most common questions

Close-up side view of Boomstik paddle showing Inertia Tuned MOI sleeve with neon green pickleball on indoor court

Project Boomstik® represents Selkirk Sport’s most advanced paddle to date, incorporating more new technology than any previous Selkirk LABS release.

Engineered for maximum performance, the Boomstik features the new BoomCore system, which delivers up to 12% more ball velocity compared to a Gen 3 paddle. The paddle design solves the long-standing tradeoff between power and durability, resisting core crush for consistent performance over time.

With the addition of a pre-installed MOI Tuning System for stability, InfiniGrit™ Surface for long-lasting spin, and two shape options (elongated or widebody), the Boomstik provides players with unmatched power, control, and longevity — all backed by Selkirk’s limited lifetime warranty.

As the most advanced paddle Selkirk has ever created, the Boomstik introduces technology never before seen in pickleball. This is not just a paddle — it’s a premium performance tool designed for serious players who want cutting-edge innovation backed by Selkirk’s warranty and reputation.

Naturally, players have a few questions. Here’s what you need to know.

Is the Boomstik approved for tournament play?

Yes. The Boomstik is approved by USA Pickleball (USAP) for sanctioned tournaments and is also approved for PPA Amateur events. Its MOI Tuning System is recognized as an external weighting system, similar to tungsten tape.

  • For 99.9% of players, including those competing in USAP and amateur PPA tournaments, the Boomstik is fully approved.

  • For Selkirk's professional players on the PPA and MLP tours, we offer a UPA-A–approved paddle version without the MOI system pre-installed.

  • We are actively working with the UPA-A to have the MOI system recognized as a preset perimeter-weighting solution, on par with other widely accepted external weight adjustments.

Bottom line: The rumor that Boomstik paddles are not tournament-approved is false.

Can the MOI Tuning System be moved or removed?

No. The MOI Tuning System is semi-permanent by design. It delivers maximum sweet spot size and stability right out of the box and is not meant to be repositioned or removed.

Our pre-launch testing with a wide range of player levels and styles showed that this perimeter tuning significantly enhanced the overall playing experience. The system is engineered to optimize performance from the start, eliminating the trial-and-error process of manually adding tape or aftermarket weights.

By semi-permanently installing the weights, Selkirk ensures that every player benefits from professional-level sweet spot expansion and balance, without the need for custom adjustments.

Does the edge guard come loose on the Boomstik?

Some early production runs experienced higher rates of loose edge guards. This was due to the added complexity of installing the MOI system and unusual local heat conditions during assembly.

Since then, Selkirk has:

  • Developed new custom equipment to install MOIs.

  • Improved adhesive methods and edging techniques.

  • Built custom edging pressure machines.

  • Enhanced environmental controls during production.

Thanks to these improvements, loose edge guards have been significantly reduced. Current warranty claims for the Boomstik are below 3%.

And importantly, any paddle with a loose edge guard is fully covered by Selkirk’s warranty. We ship a replacement paddle immediately, along with a prepaid return label for the original paddle.

Are the images online showing issues accurately?

Some images showing loose edge guards are accurate depictions of paddles from early production batches. Additionally, Selkirk utilizes paddles with cosmetic defects as demo paddles or resells them as factory seconds.

Some photos circulating online show these paddles, which have known cosmetic flaws that do not affect their performance.

These images do not represent the quality of a new Boomstik purchased through Selkirk or authorized retailers.

Will Selkirk only replace a Boomstik once under warranty?

Some have highlighted specific language that has been in our policy for years, which is targeted toward serial abusers (e.g., individuals who make repeated, intentional impacts to the ground to cause purposeful damage) regarding limited replacements.

However, for individuals with legitimate issues, we have always maintained a very gracious warranty policy and do not limit replacements. This is the same trusted warranty we have been known for for nearly a decade.

In most cases, once we receive an image of a warranty issue, we ship a new paddle out with a prepaid return label within a week, so players can continue using their original paddle until the new one arrives.
